The Playgrond to Fairway School Golf program strives to provide children with new skills to help them in both golf and life. In order to lead a healthy and balanced lifestyle, the SNAG (Starting New at Golf) system focuses on developing the life skills while learning to play the game. Some of the valuable skills SNAG focuses on are:
- Boundary setting
- Wise decision making
- Conflict resolution
- Coping With Stress
- Asking for help
- Goal setting
Golf is one of the only sports that has values such as honesty and integrity built right into the game. It is important children are taught these lessons so they can discover how to use them in a variety of situations they face at home, school, during sports and play, and in everyday social interaction. SNAG’s purpose is to empower students to grow into emotionally and physically healthy and responsible adults using the skills listed above. Each of these can be presented as a lesson before or after a SNAG session. Through discussion, worksheets and role-play, kids can understand how to adopt the skills into their lives.
Our vision at British Columbia Golf is to introduce and grow the sport of golf by providing everyone in the province the opportunity to participate in a sport that promotes their physical, mental and emotional well-being.
Parents play an important role in defining the experiences their children have learning and playing golf. Here are some tips to help parents ensure their children has a positive experience: Future Links Tips for Parents
Playground to Fairway is the first step in enabling children to progress and enjoy golf for the rest of their lives. The second step involves our community of members. British Columbia is divided into eight zones and has 18 zone committees which serve our vision. If your child is interested in pursuing the game further our Zone Chairs are happy to share information on programming in your local area.
The Golf Canada website is a great resource for finding local golf clubs or other learning centers. Simply click here and enter your postal code to view a list of golf clubs near you.
In addition to a good training and coaching program, there are a variety of ways to introduce your child to the game of golf:
- Accompany friends or relatives to driving range
- Attend local golf tournaments
- Watch golf on television
- Collect information from local golf clubs about junior programs
- Consider schools that include golf in their curriculum
- Caddie for a relative at a fun club event
- Check community centre bulletin boards and flyers for after-school, weekend and summer golf programs
